I, Sirius Black,Harry Potter's godfather, hereby give him permission to visit Hogsmeade on weekends.

'Black lost everything the night Harry stopped You-Know-Who, and he’s had twelve years alone in Azkaban to brood on that...'

‘Anyway, they cornered Black in the middle of a street full of Muggles......An’ you know what Black did then?’ Stan continued in a dramatic whisper. ‘What?’ said Harry. ‘Laughed.’ said Stan. ‘Jus’ stood there an’ laughed.’

‘He got very angry when she wouldn’t let him in, you see.’ Peeves flipped over, and grinned at Dumbledore from between his own legs. ‘Nasty temper he’s got, that Sirius Black.’

‘Oh yes,’ said Dumbledore coldly. ‘But I’m afraid no Dementor will cross the threshold of this castle while I am Headmaster.’

‘Why couldn’t Black have hidden in Snape’s office, eh? He could have finished him off for us!’

‘Not Harry, not Harry, please not Harry!’ ‘Stand aside, you silly girl ... stand aside, now ...’ ‘Not Harry, please no, take me, kill me instead...'

‘When they get near me –’ Harry stared at Lupin’s desk, his throat tight, ‘I can hear Voldemort murdering my mum.’ Lupin made a sudden motion with his arm as though he had made to grip Harry’s shoulder, but thought better of it.

‘The fortress is set on a tiny island, way out to sea, but they don’t need walls and water to keep the prisoners in, not when they’re all trapped inside their own heads, incapable of a single cheerful thought. Most of them go mad within weeks.’

‘I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.’

White an’ shakin’, he was.

‘Lily, take Harry and go! It’s him! Go! Run! I’ll hold him off –’

‘Professor Lupin?’ he said. ‘If you knew my dad, you must’ve known Sirius Black as well.’ Lupin turned very quickly. ‘What gives you that idea?’ he said sharply. ‘Yes, I knew him,’ he said shortly. ‘Or I thought I did. '

‘Well – let’s drink to a Gryffindor victory against Ravenclaw! Not that I’m supposed to take sides, as a teacher ...’ he added hastily.

‘Well, here it is, we’ve done everything we could think of, and there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with it at all – you’ve got a very good friend somewhere, Potter ...’

watching the giant squid propel itself dreamily across the surface of the lake.

‘I thought you’d come and help your friend,’ he said hoarsely. His voice sounded as though he had long ago lost the habit of using it. ‘Your father would have done the same for me.'

‘Going to kill me, Harry?’ he whispered. Black stared up at him out of those sunken eyes. ‘I don’t deny it,’ he said, very quietly. ‘But if you knew the whole story –’

‘Harry ... I as good as killed them,’ he croaked. ‘I persuaded Lily and James to change to Peter at the last moment, persuaded them to use him as Secret Keeper instead of me ... I’m to blame, I know it ...'

‘I was scared. I set out for your parents’ house straight away. And when I saw their house, destroyed, and their bodies – I realised what Peter must have done. What I’d done.’ His voice broke. He turned away.

'except when I come to watch the Quidditch, of course ... you fly as well as your father did, Harry ...’

He looked at Harry, who did not look away. ‘Believe me,’ croaked Black. ‘Believe me. I never betrayed James and Lily. I would have died before I betrayed them.’

‘HOW DARE YOU SPEAK TO HARRY?’ roared Black. ‘HOW DARE YOU FACE HIM? HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOUT JAMES IN FRONT OF HIM?’

‘What happened to the other boy? Ron?’ said Sirius urgently.

‘We’ll see each other again,’ he said. ‘You are – truly your father’s son, Harry ...’

He sighed. ‘That was the final straw for Severus. I think the loss of the Order of Merlin hit him hard. So he – er – accidentally let slip that I am a werewolf this morning at breakfast.’

I, Sirius Black, Harry Potter’s godfather, hereby give him permission to visit Hogsmeade at weekends.

Black made a derisive noise. It served him right, he sneered. Sneaking around, trying to find out what we were up to…hoping he could get us expelled.

spellbinding, enchanting, bewitching stuff.

"I don't want a connection with Pettigrew!" said Harry. "He betrayed my parents!" "This is magic at its deepest, its most impenetrable, Harry. But trust me... The time may come when you will be very glad you saved Pettigrew's life. "
