Thetemple,cemeteryandfamilymansionofConfucius,thegreatphilosopher,politicianandeducatorofthe6th-5thcenturiesB.C.,arelocatedatQufu,ShandongProvince.Builttocommemoratehimin478B.C.,thetemplehasbeendestroyedandreconstructedoverthecenturies;todayitcomprisesmorethan100buildings.ThecemeterycontainsConfucius'tombandtheremainsofmorethan100,000ofhisdescendants.ThesmallhouseoftheKongfamilydevelopedintoagiganticaristocraticresidence,ofwhich152buildingsremain.TheQufucomplexofmonumentshasretaineditsoutstandingartisticandhistoriccharacterduetothedevotionofsuccessiveChineseemperorsovermorethan2,000years.
