本书收录《会饮篇》和《洞穴寓言》。《会饮篇》（或译作《飨宴篇》《宴话篇》）是柏拉图早期的一篇对话式作品，它描述了在一次宴会上，一群雅典男性对爱的本质的讨论。该作品以演讲和对话的形式写成，既有讽刺式的，也有认真的谈话。《洞穴寓言》选自《理想国》，柏拉图简明扼要地驳斥了“善即快乐”或“善即学问”的观点，却拒绝直接给出自己的看法，而是借用“洞穴寓言”来阐述他的观点，这是他首次详细解释唯心主义。
